Mommy, I'm pretty with long hair...Am I White??

My daughter came to me and asked me if she was White.  I looked at her pretty caramel skin and long beautiful hair and replied, "no baby, we are a mixture of races; not just black and not just white.  There are other ethnicities in between Black and White."

"But I'm pretty with long beautiful hair, I must be White, I can't be black because my hair is not nappy and my skin isn't dark," said Kayla.  "Not everyone who is Black has nappy hair and dark skin.  Nappiness only comes from not taking care of your hair."

I began to tell her what my grandparents told me..."In the old days, they said that if a person has a drop of Black blood in them; they are considered Black.  African American people range from very light skinned to very dark skinned.  There are a lot of different countries other than the United States, which have their own look and language.  Back in the days other countries invaded other countries and the diversity became worldwide," I explained.

"Ohhhh, so that's why I look the way I do?" asked Kayla.  "Yes baby, we have many different ethnicities in our blood; our family is very diverse."  "Just so happen that we are beautiful due to our DNA from all different types of ancestors from different ethnicities," I explained.

"Everyone is beautiful in their own way, no matter what type of hair they have or the color of their skin.  God made everyone in his image and loves us all equally...we are all beautiful to him."  I stated.
